How the sod maths works

  • Area to order = length × width × (1 + extra)
  • Rolls = area to order ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up
  • Pallets = area to order ÷ coverage per pallet

Roll and pallet sizes are not standard; they change from farm to farm. The presets below are copied from growers' own pages, and both can be changed to match the farm you buy from.

Before you order

  • Ask for the roll size. Switching from 10 sq ft rolls to 9 sq ft rolls raises the count by about 11% (calculated).
  • Check the minimum. Fairgreen, for example, delivers a minimum of 30 rolls (270 sq ft).
  • Prepare the soil first. The topsoil calculator works out a top-up layer under new sod.

Common questions

How many rolls of sod for 1,000 sq ft?
With 10 sq ft rolls and 5% extra for a simple rectangle, 105 rolls, or 1.5 pallets of 700 sq ft. For a curved or irregular lawn at 10% extra, 110 rolls.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
It depends on the grower. Sod Solutions says pallets "generally range from 400-700 sq. ft." Greenhorizons in Ontario sells 70 pieces of 10 sq ft (700 sq ft); Fairgreen in Markham sells skids of 80 rolls of 9 sq ft, which is 720 sq ft (calculated).
How big is a roll of sod?
Greenhorizons: 2 × 5 ft (10 sq ft). Fairgreen: 2 × 4.5 ft (9 sq ft), about 40 lb (18 kg). Sod Solutions lists slabs of 16 × 24 in (2.66 sq ft), mini rolls of 40 × 18 in (5 sq ft) and large rolls of 60 × 24 or 80 × 18 in (10 sq ft).
How much extra sod should I order?
Greenhorizons says add 5% for simple rectangles and 10% for irregular shapes, curves or obstacles. Sod Solutions advises 5 to 10% extra.
How many Fairgreen rolls for 2,000 sq ft?
At 9 sq ft a roll with 10% extra, 245 rolls, 3.06 skids of 80. Fairgreen's delivery minimum is 30 rolls (270 sq ft).
How much sod for 100 m²?
100 m² is 1,076 sq ft. With 10 sq ft (0.93 m²) rolls and 5% extra, 114 rolls, 1.61 pallets of 700 sq ft (65 m²).
How heavy is a pallet of sod?
Greenhorizons puts its 700 sq ft pallet at 2,000 to 2,500 lb depending on moisture; Fairgreen says an average skid of 80 rolls weighs 3,000 lb. Plan where the truck can drop it.
How many slabs of sod for 500 sq ft?
At 2.66 sq ft per 16 × 24 in slab with 5% extra, 198 slabs, about 1.17 pallets of 450 sq ft.
